| - DOWEL
PRESSURE-FLAKING HANDLES (ISHI STICKS) (Item #FKS001)
Dowel handles, with either an inserted copper bit or brass bit. The copper bit comes pointed whereas the brass bit is wedge shaped for notching work. The bits are three inches long with at least two inches embedded in the wood. The dowel wood can be sawed away in segments to extend the use-life of these Pressure Flaking Handles (think pencil sharpening). These are also commonly called "Ishi Sticks". Available here in sets, individually, or in bulk. DEFINITION

- ADJUSTABLE
PRESSURE-FLAKING HANDLE Item #FKS020: $35.00
This is a unique item which Phoenix Obsidian Designs is pleased to be able to offer. These handles are of hand-turned oak wood with an embedded brass mechanism which allows you to insert interchangeably, or adjust the length of, one of the pressure flaking bits by twisting an allen wrench screw. This provides a long-lasting and comfortable alternative to the dowel or other forms of pressure flaking handles. It also happens to be a close relative of the more traditional handle. Comes with a complete set of standard metal bits and an allen wrench.

- TRADITIONAL
PRESSURE-FLAKING HANDLE Item #FKS021: $25.00
This flintknapping handle is designed after one of the most traditional styles. It is a natural piece of wood (most are oak branches) that has been partially split to hold an antler pressure bit. A length of artificial sinew is provided to lash the handle together to hold the bit in place. To lengthen the bit, simply release the lashing and relash back into place. It may be difficult to get the lashing tight enough so the bit doesn't move (in part due to it being artificial and not real sinew). Comes with a set of two antler bits which may need to be slightly side grinded to fit properly.

- PRESSURE FLAKER BITS
These bits are cut the length to fit any number of Pressure Flaker Handle options, especially the adjustable handle above. The copper is useful for any type of pressure flaking, being soft enough to grab the material while strong enough not to bend out of shape. It is also a good equivalent to antler but a bit more durable. The brass works good for notching since it holds its edge longer than copper, thus similar to the more traditional choice of tooth enamel for this purpose. Meanwhile, the antler bits and tooth enamel bits are perfect for the flintknapper trying to more accurately replicate more traditional techniques. The antler bits are sized to fit in the traditional handle and with a slight bit of grinding will also fit in the adjustable handle option. The tooth enamel bit will either fit the traditional handle or can be hand wrapped for ease of use. The bit selections come in a mixed pack of 2 Copper Bits / 2 Brass Bits, or individual packs of 4 Copper Bits, 2 Split Antler Bits, or Single Tooth Enamel Bits (currently Beaver Tooth). New alternatives now available include a set of Four Square Nail Bits (soft iron like historically used) and a set of Four Twist-Hardened Copper Bits (preferred by modern flintknappers).

- ANTLER TIPS
These short antler tips can be used in the hand as a pressure flaking tool. As the tip wears down the soft central core is exposed so it needs to be sharped to a wedged shaped edge to one side of the tip. We offer them currently in three sizes: 3-4 inches, 4-5 inches or 5-6 inches. For a longer tip order the Tine Section Billet on the Percussion Tool page.
A. 3-4 Inches Item #FKS017A: $6.00
B. 4-5 Inches Item #FKS017B: $7.50
C. 5-6 Inches Item #FKS017C: $9.00
D. 6-7 Inches Item #FKS017D: $12.00

- LONG SPLIT
ANTLER PIECE
These long antler pieces are wedge split from a full antler so that the issue of the exposure of the soft central core will not result in the widening of the used pressure-flaking tip. The soft core has been ground down. The actual width of this split will be approximately a quarter of the original width of the antler (thus variable). The actual length of this piece will vary considerably.
Item #FKS018: $12.00
